Reflections on Technology and Society
Personal reflections of Dr. Donald Job. Dr. Job has a BA in Physics from Linfield College/University and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of Illinois.
Progress in Society is dependent in part on the development and adoption of new technologies.
Quality of life is dependent upon the infrastructure elements such as communications, transportation, food, housing, work conditions, economic opportunity, prevailing customs, laws and moral fiber of associates and leaders. The latter contributes to an environment where Justice-for-all and Equality of Opportunity prevail. An openness to creative solutions to problems as they arise is critical to sustain an equitable quality of life for all.
One of the contributors to fostering of creative solutions and products is the protection of intellectual property. Unfortunately the United States was persuaded (mostly by corporate interests) to abandon its 200 plus year old patent protection system (based on the Principle of First to Invent) to mimic Intellectual Property Law of many other countries that is based upon the First to File systems. The new U.S. system that has emerged since 1990s favors the well financed inventors.
Another factor in facilitating the development of products, systems and solutions to important societal problems (like less expensive, more available health care or reduction of environmental pollution) is the development of creativity friendly education system. Sadly the direction of many elementary and secondary schools is to provide a bland curriculum that is more doctrine based than creativity based. Depending upon local school boards or state education boards, prevailing dogma is taught. The independent thinkers are discouraged if not scorned. Skills in critical thinking and outside the box problem solving are downplayed. This mindsight will not help the students to be competitive in a global marketplace that continues to change rapidly. The U.S. will fall behind in their previous global technical leadership.
